Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

FAQ-Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Fisher House?
Fisher Houses are comfort homes,” built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. These homes enable family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful times – during their hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury. Click here to read about our history.

Who is eligible to stay at the Camp Lejeune Fisher House?
We are here to serve our active duty, veterans, retirees and their Families while actively receiving medical treatment at the Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune and other local medical facilities.

How do I make a reservation?
Reservations are not accepted at the Camp Lejeune Fisher House. However, a referral to the Fisher House can be made and is generally done through a case manager, hospital staff, or the service member’s unit, however, you can call the house manager directly to discuss your situation and to check on room availability.  Please call the day before your expected arrival to make sure we have a room available. Rooms are available on a medical priority basis; therefore, we recommend you have a backup plan for your lodging needs.  Backup arrangements can be made through a local hotel.  Each patient is limited to one room, and each room has a maximum occupancy of 4 people. When the house is at full-occupancy, we will maintain a waiting list.
If you are making a referral, please click here.

What does it cost?
Due to a generous grant provided by the Fisher House Foundation, there is no cost to stay at the Camp Lejeune Fisher House. We even provide laundry detergent! You will need to supply your own food and we provide space within our refrigerator, freezer and cupboards for you to do so. (Space is limited, so please keep this in mind when shopping.)

Are there any rules in place for those staying at the Fisher House?
Yes. The house is shared by up to 12 families therefore we do have House_Rules in place to ensure that everyone has a comfortable stay. Additionally each room has a guest directory with complete house guidelines and other pertinent information.

Does the Navy/Marine Corps provide the funding for Navy/Marine Corps Fisher Houses?
We fall under Non-Appropriated Funds (NAF), which pays the utilities, the salaries, and the building maintenance. However, it’s the generous donations that make this house a “home”, allowing us to provide our guests with food, shampoo, laundry detergent, toys, computers, phone cards, holiday decor, etc. for the families who stay with us.

If I make a donation to a specific Fisher House, will the money actually be spent there?
Donations made to a specific Fisher House are spent on that house. The money is used to improve the facility, provide amenities for the guests, celebrate holidays, and enhance the range of services provided.

What types of donations are accepted at the Camp Lejeune Fisher House?
We do have limited storage space however we can always utilize gift cards and monetary donations. For health reasons, we cannot accept most used items.  Please click here for our current “Wish List”. You are welcome to contact the House Manager at (910) 450-3884 or via email to discuss your specific donation.

Items always accepted:

If I want to make a donation, how do I do it?
The direct approach is best – mail or deliver your donation to us at the Camp Lejeune Fisher House, 4 Recovery Way Camp Lejeune NC 28547. Checks and money orders are payable to the Camp Lejeune Fisher House (DON).

Do you have any volunteer opportunities?
Fisher Houses are blessed with the best volunteers. For current opportunities, check our volunteers page.

Can I volunteer in the evening or on the weekend?
We try very hard to make sure nothing is scheduled at the house outside of normal working hours. Once office hours are over, the residents have the house to themselves. This is their time to relax, enjoy some quiet time, and be alone with their Families.

Our organization would like to host an event at the Fisher House for the Families. Can we do that?
That depends! There are several factors we have to take into consideration before allowing a group to come into the house. Typically, we do NOT allow events to happen outside of normal business hours (see above). You would need to get approval from the House Manager. The Manager can be reached at (910) 450-3884 or via email.

Is the Fisher House open to the public?
The Camp Lejeune Fisher House is a “home away from home” for our families. If you or your group would like to visit/tour the Fisher House, please contact the House Manager to schedule a time to do so. Tours/visits are only conducted during normal business hours. After normal business hours, only our residents and their invited guests are permitted in the house! Please respect their privacy.

All visitors do need to check-in at the office.

Can I bring my pet(s)?
No. For health reasons, and because we have a communal living arrangement, we cannot allow any animals on the Fisher House grounds. If you need to bring your pets with you, please make arrangements with one of the many boarding facilities in the area prior to your arrival.

However, per the law, we do allow service animals. If you have a service animal, please be sure to bring your service animal’s paperwork with you.
